Exploring the enchantment of Muskoka Lakes

Muskoka is renowned for its collection of freshwater lakes, the most prominent being Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph. One of the best ways to explore all three lakes is to set out on your very own boating journey. Many marinas offer boat rentals or a Personal Watercraft for rent, so let that not deter you! Here’s a delightful day-long route that begins in the most southern part of Lake Muskoka, (Gravenhurst) and circles through Lake Rosseau and Lake Joseph.

Morning: Begin your day with a tea or coffee and a delectable treat from the Blue Willow Tea Shop located in Muskoka Wharf, Gravenhurst. This area features a fine selection of shops, dining, a weekly seasonal farmers market, and of course, is home to two Muskoka Steamships which are North America’s oldest operating mail steamships! The Discovery Centre showcases an exceptional display highlighting Indigenous culture, which delves extensively into the history of Muskoka, tracing its evolution through different eras, and introduces the newly upgraded fully electric steamship! Additionally, you’ll find numerous iconic vintage wooden boats, each a classic beauty synonymous with Muskoka.

One of the best places to view by boat is the Gravenhurst Narrows Light House. It is located on the east end of Lighthouse Island, near the southern end of Lake Muskoka. Gravenhurst Narrows Lighthouse remains active today, showing a fixed red light to guide vessels through “The Narrows,” but it is now formally known on the Coast Guard’s List of Lights as Lighthouse Island Lighthouse.

If you are feeling like a quick dip, hit the open water with a cruise over to the family-friendly Kirby’s Beach! There is access to a fantastic kid’s playground with picnic tables and washroom facilities. Kids and parents love the shallow clean waters and relish sitting and soaking up the sun!

Mid-Morning-Early Afternoon: Time for a leisurely cruise past the coveted Millionaires Row along Squirrels Island. Stunning architecture, expansive grounds, and luxurious amenities reflect the affluence and discerning tastes of their owners. Overtime, Millionaire’s Row has evolved, with some estates being preserved in their original condition, while others have undergone renovations and modernization – blending classic elegance with contemporary comforts.

As you near the northern part of Lake Muskoka, you will enter one of the most iconic villages of Muskoka Lakes. Port Carling and is known as the ‘Hub of the Muskoka’.

Lake Rosseau is the home to the historical resort of Windermere House and nothing emulates grandeur and elegance like the captivating ‘Lady of the Lake’. This Victorian landmark offers two dining options such as The Rosseau, and Windermere Pub and Patio. Sharing a meal with friends and family in either venue is simply a must-do!

An interesting point of reference as you travel further northeast is a lovely island called Monyca Island which was the original Steamship post office! The architecture of this boathouse alone is spectacular and is kept in pristine condition. Easily identified by the yellow and white exterior with coordinating Muskoka Chairs!

As you head further north, you will pass the lovely Lower Rosseau Falls and end up in the quaint village of Rosseau. This town features an LCBO, original general store, the famous Crossroads restaurant and a note-worthy antique store. If you time it for Friday’s mornings, you will experience the quaint Rosseau Farmer’s Market!

Late Afternoon: Cruise your way through the Lake Joseph River, which is a scenic winding canal with speed restriction zones. Here you will pass the Pride of Rosseau Marina, and you can stop and refresh with an ice cream cone and check out their Cabana Store and selection of boats! Cruise past Chief’s Island, which is Lake Joseph’s largest island, home to only 10 cottages with a primary focus on conservancy.

Cruise up further north to Burnegie Bay where you can inch close to an impressive vertical rock face! Quite possibly, there might be some brave souls attempting to jump from the 60 ft granite cliff!

If you were intrigued by Millionaire’s Row, make sure to explore Billionaire Row to see more extravagant cottages owned by the wealthy. It’s the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of the lavish lifestyle.

If anyone in your group has a craving for sweets, head down to Foot’s Bay at the Cove Marina. There’s a delightful treat store named Shaw’s, which is stocked with an abundance of candies to satisfy your sweet tooth.

This route will give you a great overview of the Big Three, and you won’t discover everything on your initial visit. This region invites repeated exploration, beckoning you to return and uncover its wonders over time!

This property has been a delight to represent for the past five years, and it continues to impress its guests year after year. Summer Breeze is wonderfully located only seven minutes from Port Carling and twenty minutes from Bracebridge.

One of the features that stands out the most about Summer Breeze is its Muskoka Room! The doors open right up onto their outdoor deck. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the views of Lake Rosseau through massive windows.

The Muskoka Room is not the only room that opens onto the deck, the boathouse doors also open right up as well! It is quite spectacular and our staff’s favourite feature of this rental. Summer Breeze’s boathouse comes complete with its own kitchenette, den, two bedrooms, and a three-piece bathroom making it perfect for multi-family / multi-generation Guests. The boathouse boasts an oversized wraparound deck and wonderful views of the lake.

One of the questions that we get asked most frequently is how many people can sit at the dining room table. This property not only has a beautiful dining table which can seat ten people, but it also has a wonderful outdoor dining space. Nothing is quite as popular as a BBQ on a summer night seated outside! (It’s certainly what we look forward to!) Summer Breeze also comes equipped with a firepit (what Muskoka night is complete without sitting around the fire with friends and family?) and a sauna.

Summer Breeze also includes a brand-new gym with new gym equipment. If privacy is your concern, you have nothing to worry about on this three-acre property complete with 300 feet of shoreline. Jayne's connection to the upcoming film "My Old Ass"

We are thrilled to see the praise pouring in for “My Old Ass” following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival! This particular film holds a special place in the hearts of everyone at Jayne’s, as it was not only shot at one of our cottage properties but also involved several actors and crew members staying at our other properties in Muskoka.

Produced by Lucky Chap, Margot Robbie’s film production company, “My Old Ass” was brought to life under the skillful direction and writing of Megan Park, the talent behind the 2021 film “The Fallout.”

Being from Ontario and shaped by summers spent in the Muskoka Region, Park chose Muskoka as the location for her latest coming-of-age story, making it a sentimental journey for her.

This comedy/drama revolves around Elliott, portrayed by Maisy Stella, a queer teen living on the lake in Muskoka. As Elliott prepares to embark on her first year of college, a transformative mushroom trip introduces them to their future self, played by the hilarious Aubrey Plaza.

In the film, Elliott’s home is our property, “Sterling Point,” located on the north end of Lake Joseph. In an interview with Sundance, Park explained her quest for the perfect cottage and emphasized the desire for her main character’s home to exude the ambiance of a place where “you are always hearing a screen door slam in the background.” Sterling Point, a century-old traditional cottage, perfectly encapsulated this sentiment, with Park expressing, “it evokes such a nostalgic feeling and perfectly sets the tone for our film.”

The cast and crew evidently enjoyed both the on-set experience and their free time in Muskoka. Hopefully also developing a deep affection for the region, akin to Park’s fond memories of growing up there. A Q & A session with the LA Times saw the cast reminiscing about boating to dinners and jet skiing to work while shooting in Muskoka.

Big congratulations from Jayne’s to everyone involved in the making of this film! We extend our thanks for choosing Muskoka and Sterling Point as the backdrop for this production. There is no wide release date just yet, but we are so looking forward to seeing it!

Until then, see the beauty of Elliott’s home, Sterling Point on our website, and delve into the behind-the-scenes moments shared by Megan Park at the cottage and in Muskoka posted on her Instagram @megan_park.

Sterling Point is available for rentals this summer, starting at $11,000 CAD per summer week plus taxes and fees.

Kurt & Wyatt Russell on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert Podcast remind us about the beauty of disconnection.

Kurt Russell, husband of Goldie Hawn, and his son, Wyatt Russell, recently sat down with Dax Shepard on his podcast, Armchair Executive. During the episode, they reminisced about their summers spent at their cottage in Muskoka, which Dax got to experience while he was dating Goldie’s daughter Kate Hudson.

We were captivated by their remarks centered around the enchantment of Muskoka and the profound experience of connecting with loved ones in an era predating the widespread adoption of the internet, television, and social media.

Dax Shepard and the Russells eloquently reminisced about a time when Muskoka, and Cottage Country in general, lagged behind the rest of the world in terms of internet connection and cell service. This period represented a simpler time, where connectivity was more of a choice than a necessity. The benefits of this disconnection is not exclusive to celebrities but can also resonate with typical cottagers who remember this era of cottaging.

For many years, Muskoka embraced a pace of life where being connected was optional, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in the present moment and relish the company of nature and those around them. Wyatt Russell aptly described the Muskoka experience as a departure from everything, providing an opportunity to be genuinely present with loved ones.

While the world has evolved, and the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives, Muskoka continues to hold a unique charm. The advent of widespread internet connection, even in cottage settings, has transformed it from an option into a priority, tempting individuals to remain constantly connected.

In light of these changes, we propose a challenge to those fortunate enough to spend time in Muskoka: rediscover its essence by temporarily disconnecting from screens. Resist the allure of checking your phone or watching Netflix, and instead, savor Muskoka as it was intended to be experienced – screen-free and fully engaged with the present moment and the people around you.

So, the next time you find yourself at the cottage, consider leaving your laptop behind, turning off your phone, and resisting the urge to switch on the TV. By doing so, we guarantee that you will immerse yourself more deeply in the natural beauty of your surroundings and cherish the company of those who matter most.

The magic of Muskoka has never been lost; it simply awaits rediscovery through a conscious choice to embrace the beauty of disconnection.

Navigating Muskoka: Marina for Boat Rentals and Boat Services

Muskoka truly comes alive on the water. With the interconnection of its major lakes—Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph—boating becomes the preferred method of transporation and exploration.

In Muskoka, expect to see an array of impressive boats—from decked-out waterski vessels to classic vintage wooden boats and laid-back pontoon cruisers. These boats are the sportscars of Muskoka, grabbing attention wherever they glide.

The popularity of boats in the area demands its fair share of marinas offering boat sales, gas, servicing, storage, equipment, and, of course, boat rentals!

These watercraft often carry a hefty price tag, sometimes even surpassing the value of the boathouses that shelter them. As a result, renting a boat has become a popular addition to Muskoka cottage rentals. It’s the perfect way to experience Muskoka living without a major financial commitment.

Our Concierge team is all set to assist you in securing a boat rental through our preferred marinas. These marinas offer various types of boats for different durations. Before you set sail, their experts ensure you’re comfortable handling the specific boat, acquaint you with the lake rules, and provide all the necessary safety gear—lifejackets, bumpers, ropes, and paddles.

Exploring Muskoka Cottages: Pools and Hot Tubs

When it comes to sought-after amenities, our guests frequently inquire about properties with pools. While the majority of our listings boast access to the lake—essentially a natural pool in Muskoka—the appeal of a dedicated pool or hot tub isn’t lost on us.

In the warmth of Muskoka’s summer, the lake becomes an exquisite place to swim, with temperatures hovering between 18-21 degrees Celsius (64.4 F to 69.8 F). In certain smaller lakes or shallower areas, the water can even be warmer, often a bath-like temperatures.

However, we recognize the allure of having the option of a pool or hot tub. On cooler days, the ability to heat a pool to your comfort or soak in a hot tub after a lake swim is definitely appealing. Additionally, these amenities extend the summer season, allowing for comfortable swimming across more months of the year.

Here are some of our top picks for Muskoka and non-Muskoka cottages featuring pools and/or hot tubs:

Avonlee, a stunning Super Elite property on Lake Joseph, remains consistently booked every summer. One of its primary draws? A large Infinity Edge pool complemented by an integrated hot tub.

Set back from the lake, this property boasts a pool, hot tub, and lake access on the Muskoka River. With ample land for privacy in the backyard pool sanctuary, down the driveway and across the road, you’ll find your private dock on Lake Muskoka, a gateway for lake dips or exploration by boat.

Featuring a hot tub right on the dock, Lake Joe First Class provides the perfect spot to warm up with a lake view after a refreshing swim.

The Homestead boasts a wood-burning cedar hot tub, which exudes a pleasant, natural aroma, providing extra relaxation and benefits than a typical hot tub.

True to its name, The Last Resort’s standout feature is its large pool. Complete with a bridge leading to a fire feature in the center, a waterslide, and a cascading waterfall, it’s pool is very reminiscent of those you’ll find at Five Star Resorts.

The sleek 65ft pool at Bunker Ridge perfectly complements the house’s design. Adjacent to a poolside cabana with five lounge chairs, it invites days spent poolside, alternating between dips and the pool and sessions basking in the sun.

Boasting a 40’ inground saltwater pool with fire and waterfall features, Chateau Lake Simcoe offers convenience with its pool house, equipped with a powder room and changing facilities.

In the realm of Muskoka cottages, the appeal of pools and hot tubs stands undeniable. Whether nestled in the woods or overlooking the lakeshores, these amenities add an extra layer of luxury, extending the pleasures of summer beyond the confines of the calendar.

Hosting a dinner party can feel overwhelming, especially in Muskoka, where the more remote setting brings both challenges and opportunities to create an unforgettable experience. Here are our top 7 tips and things to keep in mind for hosting successful dinner parties in Muskoka.

1. Arrival & Parking

Given the absence of Uber in Muskoka, guests will need to drive or boat to your cottage. To streamline their arrival, inquire beforehand about their mode of transportation and ensure ample docking space for their boats. If space is limited, consider relocating your own boat to accommodate your guests. Guide them regarding any navigational hazards they should know before their arrival. Being present at the dock to welcome and assist them in docking can set a warm tone for the evening.

2. Beverage Selection

As a gracious host, cater to your guests’ preferences by stocking up on both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Begin with a refreshing cocktail, such as an Aperol Spritz or a customized signature drink. Garnish the cocktails thoughtfully for an appealing presentation. However, ensure responsible drinking by arranging for designated drivers or offering a guest room for those who may need to stay over.

3. The Gathering Spot

Take advantage of Muskoka in the summertime by initiating the gathering outdoors, whether it’s at the boathouse, on the dock, or the cottage deck. Consider the spot with the best view for a mesmerizing sunset experience. If your cottage doesn’t offer sunset views, treat your guest with a sunset cruise.

4. The Menu

Start the evening with crowd-pleasing hors d’oeuvres like a charcuterie board or unique options like crostinis or guacamole—easy-to-eat choices that also look enticing. For the main course, provide a variety of options, such as salmon/chicken or pickerel/steak, accompanied by sides like a fresh summer salad and corn on the cob, all prepared with seasonal and fresh ingredients. Opt for desserts from local bakeries for a fresh and flavorful finish. Don’t forget to have alternative options available for any younger guests or picky eaters.

5. Setting the Mood

Craft the perfect atmosphere by dimming the lights and scattering candles throughout the space. Curate a playlist that suits the mood, whether it’s nostalgic 70s rock or sophisticated jazz.

6. The Dining Experience

Unless equipped with outdoor heating or on a warm evening, plan to transition indoors for dinner. Set the table in advance with all table accessories—placemats, charger plates, fabric napkins—and embellish it with a captivating centerpiece featuring fresh flowers and candles. Conclude the night in the great room, possibly with a fire crackling in the fireplace and music playing in the background.
