Sterling Point: The Muskoka Cottage Behind “My Old Ass” Film

January 22, 2024

Jayne's connection to the upcoming film "My Old Ass"

We are thrilled to see the praise pouring in for “My Old Ass” following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival! This particular film holds a special place in the hearts of everyone at Jayne’s, as it was not only shot at one of our cottage properties but also involved several actors and crew members staying at our other properties in Muskoka.

Produced by Lucky Chap, Margot Robbie’s film production company, “My Old Ass” was brought to life under the skillful direction and writing of Megan Park, the talent behind the 2021 film “The Fallout.”

Being from Ontario and shaped by summers spent in the Muskoka Region, Park chose Muskoka as the location for her latest coming-of-age story, making it a sentimental journey for her.

This comedy/drama revolves around Elliott, portrayed by Maisy Stella, a queer teen living on the lake in Muskoka. As Elliott prepares to embark on her first year of college, a transformative mushroom trip introduces them to their future self, played by the hilarious Aubrey Plaza.

In the film, Elliott’s home is our property, “Sterling Point,” located on the north end of Lake Joseph. In an interview with Sundance, Park explained her quest for the perfect cottage and emphasized the desire for her main character’s home to exude the ambiance of a place where “you are always hearing a screen door slam in the background.” Sterling Point, a century-old traditional cottage, perfectly encapsulated this sentiment, with Park expressing, “it evokes such a nostalgic feeling and perfectly sets the tone for our film.”

The cast and crew evidently enjoyed both the on-set experience and their free time in Muskoka. Hopefully also developing a deep affection for the region, akin to Park’s fond memories of growing up there. A Q & A session with the LA Times saw the cast reminiscing about boating to dinners and jet skiing to work while shooting in Muskoka.

Big congratulations from Jayne’s to everyone involved in the making of this film! We extend our thanks for choosing Muskoka and Sterling Point as the backdrop for this production. There is no wide release date just yet, but we are so looking forward to seeing it!

Until then, see the beauty of Elliott’s home, Sterling Point on our website, and delve into the behind-the-scenes moments shared by Megan Park at the cottage and in Muskoka posted on her Instagram @megan_park.
