Preparing Your Cottage for Ontario Winters: Essential Tips

As temperatures drop and Ontario’s winter arrives, ensuring your cottage is ready for the snowy, cold weather becomes a priority for property owners. Some may opt to close up until spring, while others prepare for cozy winter stays. Either way, bracing for Canada’s challenging winters is key.

We’ve compiled a list of 4 tips for protecting your cottage investment this winter:

1. De-icers and Hazard Precautions

Installing de-icers or bubblers to maintain open water can be hazardous. As a property owner, it’s crucial to mark any ice openings around docks and boathouses with clear signs (such as “Danger Open Water”) and multi-directional lights. Avoid red lights that might be mistaken for snowmobile brake lights during fog or storms. Keep affected areas localized, use timers to control the open area’s size, and monitor the system regularly. If you can’t be present, have someone check on it to ensure proper operation, size, and maintenance of warning lights and markers.

2. Snow Removal for Safety

Snow removal goes beyond driveways; it extends to clearing roofs, rooftop decks, walkways, and stairs to prevent damage and accidents. Ensure driveways are plowed adequately to accommodate emergency vehicles if needed.

3. Chimney Maintenance

Safety is paramount year-round. Regular chimney sweeping for fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, typically in high use during winter, ensures safe and efficient operation. Proper cleaning enhances ventilation and contributes to safety and comfort. Always exercise caution when disposing of ashes, ideally storing them in a metal container until completely cooled.

4. Cottage Temperature Maintenance

For those keeping their cottages open during winter, maintaining a minimum thermostat setting of 55°F/16°C during extended absences is recommended to prevent freezing.

Preparation is key to braving Ontario’s winter at your cottage. From de-icers and temperature control to snow removal and chimney maintenance, these tips ensure a safe and comfortable experience during the colder months.
